Reunions are always a big deal and with the recent surge of old bands getting back together, Festivals are reaping all the benefits. As of now Outkast is reuniting and leading the lineup for Coachella, but what's so special about that? Outkast is playing at 40 different festivals this year! Smash Mouth on the other hand is not currently scheduled to be at any festival (not even as audience members) so if they headline Coachella, the event will be that much more epic. Instead of witnessing the same reunion everyone will be talking about, you could be one of just a few (thousand) people to see a Smash Mouth reunion. Because after all "All that glitters is gold, Only shooting stars break the mold"
Tickets to music festivals are expensive and rightfully so; Lots of bands come from all over to perform together at one event. Smash Mouth is from Southern California, not too far from where Coachella takes place. Not only would the close proximity ensure their on-time arrival, but not having to pay the band's travel expenses (letting them take the city bus) would probably have made the tickets slightly cheaper all around. And it's like they say "You'll never know if you don't go, You'll never shine if you don't glow"
Anyone who's ever gone to a music festival knows that more important than your tickets are the drugs you're potentially taking. Despite Smash Mouth's popularity, they faded out of most people's lives just before partying became a thing. Finally you'll have the chance re-live the Smash' while on Ecstasy or some other empathogenic drug almost guaranteeing a mind-blowing experience. It's like you always say, "Didn't make sense not to live for fun, Your brain gets smart but your head gets dumb"
Nostalgia is like the coolest thing since POGs ( OMFG remember those?!?) Nothing makes you seem more unique than holding on to a deep love for something from your childhood. Sure you could talk about the Ninja Turtles or Rugrats, but come on EVERYONE remembers that stuff. If Smash Mouth was headlining Coachella, you could step it up a notch and be the first to proclaim your longing for the days of All Star and Walkin on the Sun. Now's the time to do it, you're not getting any younger, "Well the years start coming and they don't stop coming, Fed to the rules and I hit the ground running"
Smash Mouth made it a point to stretch out the fame of their song(s) for as long as possible. This resulted in Smash Mouth only accumulating a modest discography with just a few hits. With a much smaller catalog than other Coachella headliners, Smash Mouth would likely have a pretty short (but still rockin') set, leaving attendees with more time/energy to see other acts. It's a big festival full of lots of different acts, "So much to do So much to see so what's wrong with taking the back streets."
When you're trying to stay ahead of the curve, sometimes you can't be interested in the what's popular because other people will quickly catch on and tire out said thing. That's why people who are truly on the cutting edge like to pick unpopular, disregarded things to be interested in so they seem different and independent. Smash Mouth is almost synonymous with the word lame nowadays, so why not be the first in your circles to claim it as your own? Just think how obscure your tastes will seem when you tell people you're going to see Smash Mouth! Next time someone asks you about your bizarre music interests you can just say "My world's on fire, how about yours? That's the way I like it and I never get bored."
